Each Mystery Box actively contributes to the preservation of biodiversity. Proceeds from the campaign will support the acquisition of land near Poland’s Biebrza National Park. Once open landscapes, these areas have transformed over the past decades into a rich and diverse ecosystem.
The ForeverForest, under the care of the Natural Heritage Foundation, grows without fearof deforestation, fostering ecosystems and providing shelter for wildlife. Notonly does such forest preserve biodiversity, but it also serves as a vital carbonsink, with living and dead trees storing atmospheric carbon to combat climatechange.
-------
The Biebrza National Park, spanning nearly 60,000 hectares, is the largest national park in Poland. Its vast swamps, regularly flooded by the spring waters of the Biebrza River, have remained largely untouched by humans for centuries, creating an ideal refuge for extraordinary wildlife. The park is home to lynxes, multiple wolf packs, otters, and beavers. Over 280 bird species have been recorded here, including the greater spotted eagle, great snipe, black grouse, and aquatic warbler. The Biebrza Valley also serves as one of Europe’s last refuges for elk, whose ancestors have inhabited this region for over 12,000 years. The genetic lineage of these animals has endured since the Ice Age, making their preservation crucial for biodiversity.
Every year, the planet loses approximately 13 million hectares of forest, an area equivalent to all the trees in Poland and the Czech Republic combined. This is especially critical as an estimated 95% of forests worldwide face deforestation threats.
Forests play essential roles in retaining water, preventing floods and cooling temperatures. Moreover, the growing forest acts as a “carbon reservoir,” where both living and dead trees capture and permanently store carbon absorbed from the atmosphere. It’s estimated that emissions from deforestation and peatland drainage contribute to approximately 15% of global CO2 emissions.
The loss of biodiversity has reached alarming rates, with scientists estimatingn that species extinction today occurs 1,000 times faster than before human activity. The United Nations predicts that up to one million species could face extinction in the coming decades.
The Natural Heritage Foundation safeguards Poland’s natural heritage, protecting old-growth forests and securing critical habitats for endangered species. Their work includes legal advocacy, empowering local communities to protect nearby woodlands, and creating sanctuaries for rare and vulnerable animals. Through their efforts, the foundation ensures that nature thrives even in the face of increasing climate and environmental challenges.
